Giorgos Stathopoulos, born on April 16, 1944, in Kallithea of Agrinio, Greece, embarked on his artistic journey at the Athens School of Fine Arts - ASFA (1966-1971). Under the guidance of mentors like Yannis Moralis and Nikos Nikolaou in painting, and Yannis Pappas and Dimitris Kalamaras in sculpture, he honed his skills. Stathopoulos gained recognition as a painter of folk art, a style that feels contemporary yet rooted in tradition. His artistic preferences lean towards anthropocentric themes infused with the Hellenic ideal. Renowned Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis (1925-1994) provided insight into Stathopoulos's artistic pursuits, describing him as practicing his "silent art" in his studio. Analogous to an old chemist, he explores the interplay of colors, drawings, and birds. A lone bird in a vast light blue sky may transform into a deathly grey figure and then take on an archaic quality in an ochre environment. Rather than conforming to a prescribed identity labeled as 'modern,' dictated by merchants and authorities, Stathopoulos seeks a connection with the mysterious and authentic. Engaging in conversations with friends during the evening, Stathopoulos draws inspiration from the changing times, the evolving nature of his friends, and the environment around him. Slowly, he becomes a vibrant X-ray depiction of the city, capturing the essence of the times and human experiences with sensitivity and contemplation. Spending endless hours sketching alone, he depicts doors that reveal not just the interior of a house but an infinite nightmare of seas, warships, and windows leading to the lawlessness of uneasy and troubled dreams that corrode cities and villages with vivid colors, transcending memories and fading picturesque scenes. Stathopoulos, a charismatic figure hailing from a village, consciously avoids conforming to national rhythms, rejecting uncontrollable heritage, slogans, and facile writing. Instead, he embraces a genuine approach to painting, engaging in the laborious documentation of modern despair, a narrative that inherently becomes national. This unique perspective is what captures our interest in him. Throughout his career, Stathopoulos has showcased numerous solo exhibitions and contributed to various group exhibitions. Beyond his primary focus, he has delved into stage design and lent his artistic touch to illustrate record covers, posters, books, and practical objects. Since 1996, he has meticulously engraved over 200 works on copper and linoleum, further enriching his diverse artistic portfolio.Read moreRead less
