Biography

Gelos Michailidis, born in 1968 in Utrecht, The Netherlands, began his artistic journey as a graffiti artist in 1986, a passion he pursued for many years. In 2009, he ventured into painting, a skill he taught himself. His inspiration stemmed from visiting the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where he was captivated by the works of old Dutch masters like Andreas Schelfhout, Jacob van Ruisdael, and Barend Cornelis Koekkoek. Initially focusing on painting Dutch seascapes, dunes, and skies, Gelos was particularly drawn to the interplay of light, space, and shadows on the landscape. In recent years, Gelos has dedicated his artistry to capturing the essence of the sea and its dynamic waves. Through meticulously layering oil paint on panels, he painstakingly recreates the intricate details of turning waves, foam flakes, splashes, and the transparent quality of water. Drawing from photographs taken on different days and times, Gelos zooms in on each wave to extract its unique characteristics before translating them into his hyperrealistic and personalized interpretation. The constant flow of inspiration from the sea, dunes, and skies fuels his creative process, resulting in captivating and evocative oil paintings.
