Biography

Alekos Fassianos, born in Athens in 1935, is a prominent Greek painter. Having studied at the School of Fine Arts in Athens, he furthered his artistic education in Paris through a scholarship awarded by the French government from 1960 to 1963. However, upon his return to Athens, he faced removal due to the 1967 dictatorship. Paris played a pivotal role in integrating him into the cultural milieu of the 1960s, with figures like Louis Aragon analyzing his work and Jean-Marie Drot, the former director of Villa Médicis, exploring Fassianos's art in "Mythological Voluptuousness." Upon his arrival in Paris, Fassianos delved into lithography, crafting works that resemble narratives by incorporating motifs from both mythology and the contemporary world. His artistic narratives often center around Mediterranean themes, depicted in warm ocher and cool bluish tones. Renowned critic Gérard Xuriguera described Fassianos's work, particularly his opulent depiction of Venus bathed in Mediterranean sunlight, as a portrayal of his homeland's charming simplicity and the joy of a tranquil existence that transcends into the marvelous. In 1966, Fassianos achieved significant recognition with an exhibition at the Facchetti Gallery in New York, marking the beginning of a successful international career. He permanently relocated to Paris in response to the Greek dictatorship in 1967, showcasing his works globally, including exhibitions in New York, Tokyo, Stockholm, Malmô, São Paulo, and Venice. Despite his worldwide presence, France remained a second home, with Fassianos regularly returning to present his new creations. Today, Alekos Fassianos is celebrated as one of the preeminent Greek painters. His characters consistently convey a unified vision of the world centered around the Mediterranean. Fassianos's depictions of nudes are far from indecent, presenting them as the purest and most innocent elements of nature. Drawing inspiration from living elements such as sun, earth, sea, and fire, Fassianos meticulously organizes and balances colors, utilizing ochers and blues to define spaces of freedom in his art. A versatile artist, Fassianos engaged with poetry, coloring the words of esteemed poets like Odysseas Elytis, Yannis Ritsos, Vassilis Vassilikos, Dimitris Analis, Kostas Tachtis, and more. Additionally, he ventured into theater, contributing to sets and costumes for "Hélène d’Euripide" in Athens. In 1983, at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, he created a shadow play inspired by his pictorial research. Fassianos's graphic work, including etchings and lithographs, holds significance, and he is credited with numerous illustrated books sought after by collectors, published by Ed. A. Biren and Fata Morgana. His art is characterized by a skillful blend of ancient art and modernism, leading Pierre Cabanne to aptly describe his existence as residing in a mythic world.
