Biography

Edouard Sakayan is one of the most important representatives of contemporary Greek figurative painting. Having studied at the ASKT of Athens and the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts of Paris, he consciously chose to divide his life and career between Greece and France. In his painting, with its pervasive anthropocentric character, bright colors dominate, but also the personal look of the artist. Shakayan's viewers are not understood as units, but as a single and indivisible whole. Although they retain elements of their unique, special identity, it seems that this is subordinated to the dictates of the whole. The interest is transferred to the depiction of passive gathering, which becomes synonymous with massification and the mob, while at the same time diversity is sacrificed on the altar of an indivisible unity. The stylized forms are rendered without unnecessary details - abstractly - in everyday - home - scenes, which refer to the urban societies in which they live and act. Therefore, the viewers function as idols of reality, which everyone is called upon to decode based on both collective and individual experience. Even though the image that is composed is familiar, "its power comes back with its autonomy and not with the illusion and habit of "déjà vu", emphasizes Eduard Sakayan.
